Nathan’s next stage

The past week has been crazy. Guess what? Nathan’s starting preschool next week! So I’ve been trying for a year and a half to get Nathan some help. We’ve known for a while he has Sensory Processing Disorder, and we had him in occupational therapy for many months. I and his therapist both, however, felt like he needed something more because were both concerned about his language development. Not his speech- he can articulate words great- but mostly he couldn’t express himself very well. So I went through the school system in the town we used to live in to have him evaluated.

Well that whole process was a joke. A complete, ridiculous joke. They dragged their feet and this process that was supposed to, by law, take 45 school days from start to finish took the entire semester. And when I politely nudged them and asked what I could do to expedite the process since it had been months, they got defensive with me and insisted they were within the time constraints. I even wonder if they fudged the evaluations since their findings were so off. They basically said Nathan did not have any problems.

So at any rate, that was that. But then this house opportunuty came up, we moved to a bigger city, and I heard he could be re-evaluated by the new school system. So I did just that- after I told them about our experience with the previous school system, they decided during his initial screening that they wanted to go ahead & enroll him so he can start getting help for his sensory issues.

I am so thankful for this opportunity for him! Their teachers are trained in this stuff, so I know he’ll be in good hands. He starts Tuesday, and he couldn’t be more excited!  He keeps asking when he gets to go. It took a year & a half to get to this point, and I am so glad to be living where we do so we can get him the help he needs!

A new stage has begun.
