life with a new baby
Normalcy Returns
Because Paul was able to take a little over two weeks off work for Christmas vacation, today was his first day back at work.
Nathan and I missed him while he was gone.
When Nathan first got up this morning, he didn’t realize that his daddy would be gone all day. He was in such a wonderful mood… we spend time playing Peek-a-Boo and Pat-a-Cake, I helped him with his walking skills, and I even held him in my lap and snuggled with him while I watched a short television show.
He acted like he was on top of the world while he was in my lap. He would watch the tv for a few seconds, then he would turn and look at me, grinning from ear to ear while bouncing gleefully up and down, waving his arms exuberantly while drool dripped down his chin.
Everything was a peachy as a postcard’s sunny day until I put him down for a nap.
Well, putting him down for a nap itself wasn’t so bad. He was excited to lay under the mobile and I could hear him cooing happily as I quietly exited the room. The problem occurred when he WOKE UP from his nap.
He totally woke up on the wrong side of the crib.
He was angry, sleepy, pouty, and didn’t hesitate to let me know. He cried and cried for the remainder of the day, escalating to the point of me seriously contemplating yanking out my own hair in frustration. He didn’t want to be held. He didn’t want to be sang to. He didn’t even want to play with his Winnie the Pooh.
I think he missed his daddy.
Once Paul came home, Nathan was still ill-tempered until we put him to bed. Like magic, his tears dried, his angry wails ceased, and a huge smile lit his face.
I have a son who doesn’t like to nap, but who loves going to bed at night. He is not like any other baby I’ve ever known. Well, the fighting-the-naps isn’t a rarity, but the excitement about going to bed at night certainly is.
And the normalcy of Nathan Rising returns…

More and more like a big kid
about 2 weeks ago - No comments
Nathan is such a big boy. He’s big enough to get out of bed multiple times a night, sneak around his room, and quietly play with his toys. He’s big enough to try to scramble back into bed when he hears Paul or I coming. He’s big enough to apologize for his actions and promise More >
Tis the season for… mischief!

BIG SIGH OF RELIEF. I have most of my Christmas shopping done! I spent all day Saturday braving the crowds, getting jostled by oblivious texters while walking crowded walkways. I seriously can’t stand people who text and conveniently forget that the world around them continues to revolve. Oh yeah. Speaking of texters, I was almost More >
Oh the changes they go through…

Wow. The past few days have been so busy around here. Nathan has been a bit of a pill with his tantrums and not minding lately— but as I suspected, he’s hit a few more milestones. Take last night, for example. Part of his bedtime routine includes me singing to him before we say our More >
In which I rant a little about bad parenting

I’ve been working really hard with Nathan on cleaning up after himself when he makes a mess. We clean his room twice a day… once before nap time, and again before he goes to bed. I tell him that if he doesn’t want to clean up a huge mess, then he should either not get a More >
He peed! In the potty!

Nathan peed in his potty for the first time yesterday!! See, we’ve been “going to the potty” for a couple of months now, but it’s been slow. At first, he would only sit on his potty fully clothed. Then I coaxed him into sitting on it clad only in his diaper. It’s only recently that More >
Rise and shine!

Nathan is more of a morning person, very much like his daddy. Paul practically jumps out of bed in the mornings, jumping for joy and whistling. Yes, you read that correctly. He whistles in the morning. I, on the other hand, have to will myself to sit up and slowly crawl out of bed. I’ve never More >
Naps… soon to be a thing of the past
about 2 months ago - No comments
Nathan is slowly moving away from taking naps. As of now, he still naps when he’s really tired, but it’s getting more difficult to get him to fall asleep. I’ve been co-sleeping with him (during nap times only) since he was 11 months old. At first, I welcomed the rest and the naps. Here lately, More >
I hope I never have another week like this one…

This past week was stressful. Nathan has his first visit to the Emergency Room on Wednesday. We were at the park, having a good ole time together. We were the only ones there. We had initially met one of my friends and her kids, but after they left, I decided to let Nathan stay a More >
Oh Potty Training
about 3 months ago - No comments
Well, potty training is not advancing as quickly as I anticipated. Don’t get me wrong, Nathan loves sitting on his potty. WITH HIS DIAPER ON. The moment I take his diaper off, however, he starts crying and refuses to sit on his potty anymore. I don’t make a big deal out of it, because Nathan More >
Repetitions will quickly get your attention. Believe me.

The other day, I was busy in the kitchen making Nathan his lunch. I was in a hurry because everything was timed… I was cutting up his fruit and making my sandwich while I had some broccoli steaming on the stove. Nathan kept getting right under my feet, pulling at my shirt, trying to get me to More >

Getting back into the routine can be a difficult thing. So sorry he doesn’t “enjoy” his naptime but so glad for you that he doesn’t fight you at bedtime, as well. That would be just awful!

I’m so glad, too! I know so many other babies who hate going to bed at night as much as they hate taking naps…
