life with a new baby
Sweet Pea Saga

As you know, we recently introduced solids into Nathan’s diet. We’re temporarily using Paul’s highchair from when he was a baby, keeping Nathan under supervision at all times, even though Paul’s high chair is in excellent condition. He likes almost all of the foods we’ve given him this far… pears, prunes, carrots, and bananas to name a few. So far, the only food he has adamantly vocalized his distaste for are sweet peas.
I read that some foods need to be given to baby 10-15 times before the baby decides whether or not he likes it.
I don’t know if I can keep giving Nathan sweet peas, however. We’ve only offered them a handful of times, and each time, the feeding morphs into this dramatic chain of events that usually results in Nathan arching his back, spitting sweet peas all over the place, and screeching like a wild mountain lion.
The first thing that occurs when he spies the container of green mush is his entire demeanor changes. His happy little smile disappears like a sandcastle being washed away by an angry ocean tide. He looks at it like, Oh not again. I can’t be bothered with this substance.

I have to give the little guy credit, however; even though he doesn’t like sweet peas, he still gives them another chance, although he makes it clear how reluctant he is.
Then he remembers why he didn’t like them in the first place and tries to push the spoon away.

I gently persist, making zooming airplane noises and opening my mouth wide, encouraging him to mimic me. I take a little nibble off the spoon and smile idiotically, pretending they are the best food in the world. In response, he smacks at the sweet-pea filled spoon, flicking it into the floor and making a small mess of mashed-up green goo.

He decides he’s had more than enough sweet peas and proceeds to engage in a mini-meltdown.

I take away the sweet peas and meltdown subsides. I gently wipe his face, which he does not like, and after a few minutes of struggling against the damp cloth, he finally calms down and smiles like he’s about to say, Mission accomplished! And don’t try that again.

So, how do you get a baby to eat vegetables that they don’t initially care for? I’ll try to feed him more sweet peas in a couple days, but until then, I’m going to enjoy how happy he is when I don’t try to make him eat things he doesn’t like.

Tester of Boundaries

Nathan definitely has a stubborn streak in him (I have NO IDEA WHERE HE GETS THAT. Cough, cough). After all, any baby who HOLDS IN HIS POOP is pretty damn stubborn. Nathan gets it in his head what he wants to do and nothing, I mean nothing, will change his mind.
He’s decided that he’s going to figure out More >
Nathan’s First Birthday!
about 1 week ago - 2 comments
Well, we celebrated Nathan’s birthday this weekend! I still can’t believe my baby is no longer considered an infant. He’s a officially a KID now. With opinions. And attitudes to go with those opinions. But it’s funny because when I look at him, I still see my little baby. Never mind he’s not 100% dependant and More >
Life With a One Year Old

As of next week, my little baby will no longer be considered an infant. Now, it’s life with a ONE YEAR OLD.
And it can be really frustrating, I think mostly because Nathan has all these emotions and feelings but he has no way to communicate them. One minute, he’s my sweet little guy… all smiles More >
Sleep, You Have Been Missed

Ever since Nathan was a little bitty guy, he’s fought nap time. When I would lay him down for a nap, he would either play in his crib or have a total meltdown, neither of which resulted in any sleep. And on the rare occasions when he would fall asleep, he’d only nap for 20-45 More >
He Did It!!!

Well, as you know, Nathan’s been diligently learning how to crawl. In this post, I talked about how Nathan moved about by mostly rolling all over the room and crawling backwards, then he figured out how to move forward in a crawling/shimmying/lurching motion (click here to see the video). And you can read about the first time he took More >

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!!
This time last year, I was 39 weeks pregnant and ready to meet my little guy! Little did I know that he would actually arrive SIX DAYS after his estimated due date. (Exactly why it’s ESTIMATED, right?) An extra six days may seem like a walk in the park to some of you More >

So the other day, I talked about Nathan and his mobility.
I like that he’s getting himself around now, but at the same time, his mobility has presented me with new stressors. I constantly have to keep an eye on him because he gets into anything and everything. I just say, “Not for Nathan” and will redirect More >

Well, guess what Nathan did today?
No, it wasn’t a Mega Poop. And no, he didn’t fall asleep standing up again.
Ok, since the possibilities are endless, I’ll just tell you.
He was on his belly, scooting around the living room floor. Drool was flying everywhere and his hands and feet were spinning and whacking the air so feverishly that they became More >
More Snow Fun
about 1 month ago - No comments
Remember how we had a “big” snow here in Tennessee on Saturday? (The word big is in quotes because our 5-6 inches of snow we got here is nothing compared to what those of you who live up north deal with every winter. But here in the south, 5-6 inches is something that happens quite rarely.) Well, we More >
