life with a new baby
Sweet Pea Saga

As you know, we recently introduced solids into Nathan’s diet. We’re temporarily using Paul’s highchair from when he was a baby, keeping Nathan under supervision at all times, even though Paul’s high chair is in excellent condition. He likes almost all of the foods we’ve given him this far… pears, prunes, carrots, and bananas to name a few. So far, the only food he has adamantly vocalized his distaste for are sweet peas.
I read that some foods need to be given to baby 10-15 times before the baby decides whether or not he likes it.
I don’t know if I can keep giving Nathan sweet peas, however. We’ve only offered them a handful of times, and each time, the feeding morphs into this dramatic chain of events that usually results in Nathan arching his back, spitting sweet peas all over the place, and screeching like a wild mountain lion.
The first thing that occurs when he spies the container of green mush is his entire demeanor changes. His happy little smile disappears like a sandcastle being washed away by an angry ocean tide. He looks at it like, Oh not again. I can’t be bothered with this substance.

I have to give the little guy credit, however; even though he doesn’t like sweet peas, he still gives them another chance, although he makes it clear how reluctant he is.
Then he remembers why he didn’t like them in the first place and tries to push the spoon away.

I gently persist, making zooming airplane noises and opening my mouth wide, encouraging him to mimic me. I take a little nibble off the spoon and smile idiotically, pretending they are the best food in the world. In response, he smacks at the sweet-pea filled spoon, flicking it into the floor and making a small mess of mashed-up green goo.

He decides he’s had more than enough sweet peas and proceeds to engage in a mini-meltdown.

I take away the sweet peas and meltdown subsides. I gently wipe his face, which he does not like, and after a few minutes of struggling against the damp cloth, he finally calms down and smiles like he’s about to say, Mission accomplished! And don’t try that again.

So, how do you get a baby to eat vegetables that they don’t initially care for? I’ll try to feed him more sweet peas in a couple days, but until then, I’m going to enjoy how happy he is when I don’t try to make him eat things he doesn’t like.

First visit to the dentist
about 1 week ago - No comments
Ok, so remember last time I talked about Nathan face-planting in a parking lot and knocking his two front teeth loose? Well, this post is about the ensuing dentist visit. Nathan hadn’t been to a dentist yet. It was something on our to-do list, but for some reason, I thought that kids didn’t need to More >
Oh my poor little man

So it’s been a while since my last post. A lot has been going on here! The biggest news of all is that Nathan had another emergency room visit over the weekend. I had just finished working out and was meeting Nathan and Paul at a nearby restaurant. I arrived first, so I got a More >
Easter Pics!

Me, Nathan, and Paul when we first got to Paul’s grandparents’ house for some delicious food followed by some egg-hunting… all following a beautiful Easter service at our church. Of course, it can sometimes be incredibly difficult to convince a three-year-old to sit still for a picture, but we were finally able to get a More >
Potty training, here we come
about 2 months ago - No comments
Big news in the house: Nathan is on the verge of being potty trained!! I’ve been working with him since last summer. Yes, it has taken MONTHS! I knew he was nowhere near ready, but I wanted to go ahead and introduce the idea to him. I didn’t push him and just let him get More >
And the sleeplessness continues…

Well, there has been no improvement with Nathan getting out of bed at night. My child’s willpower has surpassed mine. Unbelievable. If I had a white flag, I would totally wave it. We’ve tried everything we could think of, but nothing has worked. Discipline, bribes, rewards, promises… nothing has thwarted his apparently indomitable desire to More >
Oh the things they eat.

Nathan was walking around the house with something in his mouth. “Trees! Mmmm good trees!” he said as he chomped on it. Trees are what he calls broccoli. “What’s in your mouth, Nathan?” I asked. “Come here and give it to Mommy, please.” He hopped right on over to me, opened his mouth, and spit More >
Parenting is not for sissies

Well, there have been a few things happening around here lately. For one, my neck is slowly mending itself. I had called my doctor a week and a half ago to make an appointment, and the receptionist informed me that I wouldn’t be able to get in for 1.5 weeks due to my doctor going More >
What a day.

There is something innately endearing about a child putting his or her shoes on the wrong feet. Nathan is completely enamored with his fireman boots. They were a Christmas gift from my mom, and let me tell you, Nathan can’t get enough of them. The first thing he does in the morning, before he’s even More >
The New Year is here!
about 4 months ago - No comments
I hope everyone had a happy New Year! Regretfully, I did not. But only because I had food poisoning from (I’m pretty sure) some gravy I ate for lunch on New Year’s Eve. I started feeling queasy 3-4 hours after I ate it… and then about 8 hours after consumption, it hit full force. I More >
Oh! Pictures!

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!! We most certainly did. I will write a post on it at a later date… In the meantime, here’s some pictures from Thanksgiving. They are awesome. Yes, I know I am quite partial. We had Thanksgiving at Paul’s grandmother’s house and totally gorged ourselves on some delicious food. More >
