When the unedible becomes edible
May 18th
When Nathan was playing in the living room today, Paul and I noticed he kept periodically chewing on something, but it was so subtle that we thought since he had just finished luch, he was simply enjoying a piece of bagel. But then we noticed that after quite a while, he was still chewing on it. I did the Mom Swoop… where I pinched Nathan’s cheeks together to get his mouth to open and stuck my index finger inside his mouth with a swooping motion.
You won’t believe what I pulled out.
IT WAS A WAD OF CAT FUR.
Turbo’s fur, to be exact.
It was all mushy and soggy and had been chewed and mashed into this clump of sopping wet yuckiness and was was the yuckiest thing in all of the land.
Seriously, the kid was chewing it like it was gum. GUM. Tucked into the side of his cheek to be released for a good chomp every few minutes. I don’t even know where he found the wad of cat fur… I vacuum thoroughly every single morning.
Oh how I dread to see what else he manages to chew on before he reaches the age of ten.
To Friendship and Not Being Eaten
Oct 10th
Our cats have a few rules. No jumping on the counter tops, tables, the arm chair, or anything baby. That means no sleeping on the baby’s stuff- like the baby himself, his bouncy seat, or his rugs that we lay down in the floor during his playtime.
As a result, our cats have become devious. Turbo is probably the most cunning and likes to test the boundaries. Since he knows he’s not allowed on Nathan’s play rug, he compensates by laying down right next to it. Literally. With no room to spare.
Here’s a close-up, just to reiterate how close he comes to laying on the rug without actually laying on it. Turbo was mad at me in this picture because I kept telling him the rug was a no-no, and he was all, dude can’t you tell I’m SO not on the rug?

Nathan was playing happily, flopping and rolling around, running his hands over the designs and drooling over the colors. Eventually, his rolling and explorations led him right to Turbo’s inquiring nose. At first, Nathan was rather upset at this giant blocking his path.

And Turbo wondered if Nathan would be edible, and if he was edible, would he taste like Friskies?

I informed Turbo that Nathan is not edible and he does not taste like Friskies. Turbo then decided if you can’t eat them, join them. Turbo quickly befriended the wiggling explorer.

Here’s to friendship and not being eaten by giant cats..

Turbo
Nicknames: Turbo the Terrible, Turbinator, Turbometer
Our 30 pound Maine Coon kitty is a big ball of… well… fur.
My husband got Turbo a few years ago from a rescue center for Maine Coons. Turbo had been abused, so it took years to get the poor guy accustomed to a happy, domestic life. He’s all in all a pretty good cat. His biggest downfall, however, must be that he doesn’t groom himself.
Perhaps it’s the insanely long fur.
Perhaps it’s because of his girth.
Or, perhaps, he’s just lazy and doesn’t give a damn.
I lean toward the latter. He’s very independent and aloof, and he has his own idea on what he should do. He’s comparable to having a teenager. We have to brush him every day or his fur becomes matted and tangled. When that happens, Paul has to cut the out the mats. Turbo does extraordinarily well when that happens and just lays there, sometimes meowing somberly in protest, eyes wide and ears back, but never biting or scratching.
Same with baths.
He lets us know he doesn’t like it, but the big guy tolerates them. We tell him if he doesn’t want us to groom him, he needs to groom himself… but he never listens. Maybe he secretly likes when we do the grooming, who knows?
He also likes to play in water, which is a habit we have worked hard to finally break. I got tired of constantly cleaning paw prints off the floor.
You can normally find Turbo on the back of the couch, lounging lazily under the weak heat of the table lamp, sometimes twitching with relaxation as he dozes. When it’s time to eat, he usually waits until the other cats have had their fill before sauntering casually to the food bowl, plopping down, and enjoying his meal in peace without the other cats nudging their way in.
Turbo is one of the smartest cats I have ever known and pretty cool to be around, even for a cat.
Even when he insists on being King of the House by SITTING ON THE OTHER CATS when they steal his seats.
