Talking on the phone
Oct 25th
My brother was over here not too long ago, and he was talking on the phone with his girlfriend. Nathan, being the outgoing little social bug that he is, was dying to talk to her as well. (As you may know, Nathan loves talking on the phone!) Even though he’s never met her, he carried on a conversation with her and even “showed” her his room (by taking the phone away from his ear, aiming it towards his room, and turning it in a slow circle.) She was a good sport and talked to him for a while. Nathan walked around the house, talking and talking. And then? When my brother finally took back the phone and said his good byes, he gave the phone back to Nathan. Nathan didn’t care that no one was on the other end of the line; he continued to talk his little heart out.
Mimicry at its best
Oct 17th
Nathan loves to mimic everything I say and do.
In the mornings, before I get him out of his bed, I use the restroom and brush my teeth. Here lately, I’ve had to cough a few times and clear my throat since I am getting over a cold. And every time I cough and clear my throat, I hear an echo. Only it’s not an echo, it’s Nathan mimicking me. And I also hear an exuberant “MOMMY PEES!” when I use the restroom. Now if only he would take that exuberance and apply it to his own potty training, it would be perfect!
When I’m on the phone, Nathan will walk around the house pretending like he’s on the phone as well.
When I’m cooking, he stands right beside me, slapping his hands on the counter, indulging himself in a make-believe culinary experience.
When I spin around in circles, so does he.
And this morning, Nathan mimicked me in the ultimate way. I passed gas, and it was a little louder than I anticipated it would be (What? Everyone farts!). And then Nathan pursed his lips together and made the loudest raspberry I think I’ve ever heard.
Good thing that didn’t happen in public…
Oh Potty Training
Oct 13th
Well, potty training is not advancing as quickly as I anticipated. Don’t get me wrong, Nathan loves sitting on his potty. WITH HIS DIAPER ON. The moment I take his diaper off, however, he starts crying and refuses to sit on his potty anymore. I don’t make a big deal out of it, because Nathan is so strong-willed that if I do, he will do the exact opposite of what I desire. So I just act like it’s no big deal. In reality, however, it’s a little frustrating.
I’ve been taking Nathan to his potty for about two months now. He gets really excited about going to the potty, but will only sit on the potty fully-clothed for a few seconds. And the last couple weeks or so, he’s started to act disinterested. He’s simply not ready yet. I am more than ready, but he’s not.
Surely he won’t be in diapers forever. Right??
Opposite Day. I mean week. I mean month.
Sep 28th
I think Nathan must be going through something like an Opposite Phase. He says exactly the opposite of what he means.
Me: “Nathan, you’re not minding me. Do you want time out?”
Nathan: “Yes!”
Me: “You do? You want time out?”
Nathan: “YES!”
Me: “Fine. Go to time out.”
Nathan: “Yes, Mommy! I sorry! Yes, yes timeout!” (while throwing a temper tantrum and flopping around like a fish-out-of-water on the floor)
Me: “You don’t REALLY want time out, do you? Don’t say yes unless you REALLY want time out.”
Nathan: “Yes.”
Me: “…”
The above conversation is something I deal with every day, multiple times a day. It can really be enough to drive someone crazy, especially when temper tantrums are thrown into the mix. He knows darn good and well what the word “yes” means, so I don’t know why he is using it the wrong way. Unless he’s trying to test me. That is TOTALLY Nathan. He is my little tester… constantly testing his boundaries to see exactly how much he can get away with. Unfortunately, he does not realize that Mommy is not amused (and is, in fact, the OPPOSITE of amused) at his antics.
