Determination Gets You Everything
Feb 23rd
Here, my friends, is a video of Nathan getting better at his crawling. He’s crawling much faster and is becoming more and more coordinated. I have been like his shadow the past few days… following him around, camera poised and ready to shoot some video of him crawling. But, like I said in another post, every time he saw me turn on the camera, he would stop crawling and plop down, smiling as he waited for the inevitable flash and all the oooh‘s and aaah‘s that I say while reviewing the pictures.
He loves all the attention. He knows that the camera equals lots of fawning over him and lot (and I do mean lots) of praise for those super adorable poses that he’s getting really good at.
So get this. In order to get video of him crawling, I had to be a little crafty. You know how much he loves his laptop, right? Well, I placed Nathan at one end of the room… the laptop and I sat at the other end. I pressed one of the little musical buttons, and as soon as Nathan heard the familiar jingles, he was on his way!
I love how he slams his hands down on the floor with such determination. He’s all like, LAPTOP, I WILL GET YOU. You and your LITTLE DOG, TOO.
He Did It!!!

Well, as you know, Nathan’s been diligently learning how to crawl. In this post, I talked about how Nathan moved about by mostly rolling all over the room and crawling backwards, then he figured out how to move forward in a crawling/shimmying/lurching motion (click here to see the video). And you can read about the first time he took his first actual ”Crawling Steps” by clicking here. And now? In just the span of a few short days, he’s started crawling with his belly off the floor.
FORWARDS!
There’s been a couple time’s he’s scooted backwards, but it’s mostly when I use The Deep Voice to tell him “Not for Nathan” when he reaches out to touch the entertainment center. You know the voice. The voice that says You’re about to get into Deep Trouble, Mister. Only I don’t have a deep voice, so when I use it, it sounds more like I’m gargling with gravel.
So when I use The Deep Voice with Nathan, his outstretched hand will stop its reach in midair, hovering uncertainly. His fingers will twitch with anticipation. He wants to touch what is Off Limits so bad. Really, really bad. But he’ll turn around, hand still outstretched towards the Forbidden Loot, and he’ll look at me uncertainly. “Don’t touch that, Nathan,” I’ll say. Then he’ll scoot backwards, plop down on his bottom, and stare forlornly at the object.
So that’s about the only time he really crawls backwards now. He prefers to be up on all fours and since he’s just learned how to do it, so he doesn’t have the speed just yet. And sometimes he gets a bit wobbly. And guess what else? I GOT A VIDEO OF IT!
Leaps and Bounds

Remember how I’ve been talking about how Nathan’s been moving around all over the place via various forms of crawling? Well, he’s suddenly on the brink of being able to crawl forwards with his tummy off the floor! Today, he got on all fours and actually crawled, belly off the floor, two steps! (Can you even call it that… steps?)
He got up on all fours and rocked back and forth a few times. Then he spied Mr. Seahorse.
And guys, he CRAWLED FORWARDS! Not backwards. Not his typical army crawl. Not even the crawl/lurch. He moved his arms and legs forward in the crawling motion!
The past few days have been a whirlwind of advancements. Along with his first REAL crawling motion, he’s started pulling himself up on everything!
The coffee table. His high chair. Bookshelves. If he can reach it, he tries to pull himself up on it. He usually gets about halfway up and then plops back down again- but I have a feeling that it won’t be long at all.
He’s also becoming more adept at getting into stuff.
Like his dresser drawers.
We finally had to baby-proof Nathan’s dresser drawers in his room because he kept pulling the drawers open and digging around inside.
We are now entering the Toddler Years.
