Kisses really do heal the pain :-)
May 16th
So yesterday as I was walking around the house, I managed to twist my ankle. Don’t ask how I did that just by walking. I tend to be prone to clumsiness somehow! Anyway, it hurt like the dickens so I said, “OUCH!” as white pain shot up my leg.
“You okay, Mommy?” Nathan asked from his room. My sweet boy is always concerned about others getting hurt.
“Yeah, I’m ok. I just hurt my ankle.”
“Hurt dee ankle?” he asked.
“Yep,” I said as I lifted my leg and pointed to my ankle. “I twisted it somehow and now it hurts.”
“I kiss it and make it allllllllllllllllll better?” he said, worried.
“Aw yeah that would help a lot,” I replied as I hobbled over to him.
He gave my ankle a kiss, patted it gently, and said, “There! All better Mommy!”
And sure enough, it was.
Potty training, here we come
Mar 21st
Big news in the house: Nathan is on the verge of being potty trained!!
I’ve been working with him since last summer. Yes, it has taken MONTHS! I knew he was nowhere near ready, but I wanted to go ahead and introduce the idea to him. I didn’t push him and just let him get used to the potty on his own terms. At first, he wanted nothing to do with it. Then I was able to coax him into sitting on the potty fully-clothed. Then from there, I got him to sit on it with his pants off but his diaper on. Then we transitioned to diaper-less but most of the time, he still didn’t need to pee while he was on his potty. Since then, I’ve just been patiently watching him for his cues, waiting for him to be developmentally ready. (Different kids are ready at different points- some aren’t ready until after they are three years old.) He is finally at the point where he tells me when he needs to go potty. Up until now, he would tell me but then he would’t actually go while he was on his potty. Now, however, he’ll tell me and will actually pee once I get him to the bathroom. Most of the time when he wakes up in the morning, his diaper is dry. This tells me that he’s developing bladder control, so I will usher him to his potty where he will relieve himself.
Sometimes he is still mischevious though. For example, the other day he told me he needed to go potty. I checked his diaper and it was dry, so I took him into the bathroom. I couldn’t stay in there with him because I was right in the middle of doing something, so I got him situated and told him to stay on his potty until I came back.
He didn’t listen. Of course.
I heard little footsteps echoing on the linoleum, so I went in there to discover him standing up and walking around. I admonished him and told him that he needs to make sure he remains on the potty until I am able to come back. So I sat on the floor beside him and read him a book. I KNEW he had to pee because it had been a few hours since his last diaper change. After about ten more minutes of reading to him, I realized that he simply didn’t have to go. So I put my hand on the floor to help me stand up.
And my palm splashed firmly into a puddle of pee. Right in front of the bathroom sink.
I was not amused.
Oh the things they eat.

Nathan was walking around the house with something in his mouth.
“Trees! Mmmm good trees!” he said as he chomped on it. Trees are what he calls broccoli.
“What’s in your mouth, Nathan?” I asked. “Come here and give it to Mommy, please.” He hopped right on over to me, opened his mouth, and spit out what resembled a broccoli stem into my waiting palm. “Where’d you get this?” I asked. He just smiled and bounced out of the room.
A few minutes later, I walked into the kitchen and noticed some water had been spilled out of the vase holding my Valentine’s Day flowers Paul got me. I picked one of the flowers up out of the vase and noticed the stem had been chewed off.
Nathan had gnawed off part of the stem on one of my roses. And he then put it back into the vase, apparently thinking I would never notice.
Smile!

I had Nathan sit on his potty. I walked out of the bathroom for just a moment to do something when I heard him walking around. I rushed back in, worried pee would be puddled on the floor. As I put was putting his diaper back on, I fussed at him some and told him that he can’t run around with his diaper off and that he needed to stay seated on the potty.
“Awww come here, Mommy,” he said as he hugged me. “It’s okay.”
“Not really,” I replied. “I don’t want to clean up pee.” Then he put his hands on my cheeks and pinched them as he tried to stretch out my mouth.
“OUCH! Nathan, why’d you do that?” I yelped.
He then put his hands on his own cheeks and smiled, then pointed to his teeth. “Mile!”
“You mean you want me to smile?” I asked, giving him the biggest smile I could.
“Awww good job, Mommy! I’m so proud of you!” he said as he gave me a big hug. Well, heck. That was easy enough. Who knew a smile could make someone so happy?
