The sick germs are here…
May 20th
Well we have had a very sick little boy on our hands. Yesterday evening was the worst. Little guy was breathing fast and had a fever of 103 along with lethargy and possible body aches (it’s hard to tell since he can’t talk, but he was rubbing his knees and joints as if they were hurting.) We packed up his diaper bag and were about to take him to the hospital when he perked up a little bit (the medicine we gave him kicked in) and he started acting more normal. We took him outside and let him play where he ran around and chattered with his toys. Afterwards, he got a tepid bath, which brought the fever down some more. And of course, we were vigilant during the night because panting and breathing fast can wear a young child down really quickly, and they can go into respiratory distress in a very short time.
Fortunately, he is feeling much better today. He still has a fever, but he’s eating better and has some of his energy back. Please keep the little guy in your prayers… as you all know, it’s so hard to watch your child be in pain. He’s such a trooper, though. Throughout all this, and even when he was hurting so bad all he could do was lay in my lap and say “hurt… hurt,” he was still his sweet little self. He held my hand, gave me kisses, and told me he loved me. What a precious little boy he is. We are truly blessed to have him.
A date night I hope not to repeat any time soon…
May 16th
It has been a hectic weekend yet again here!
So Paul and I had another date night Friday night, which was really nice. Nathan stayed with Paul’s parents and I’m not even kidding when I say the child enjoyed every single minute of his time with his them. See, the last time they watched Nathan was about three months ago, and Nathan started to get sick that day. Do you know what it’s like to have a sick toddler? For all the parents out there, I’m sure you are all too familiar with it. For those of you who don’t have kids, let me tell you that a sick toddler is the worst. Especially when they can’t talk yet and tell you where they hurt. So both Nathan and Nathan’s Grandma were crying… it was such a bad experience for both of them. Because of that, I was EXTRA happy that this last visit went without a hitch; Nathan played and played and played some more outside, dug around in the flower beds, rode in a wagon, played in water dripping off the roof, took a bath, and even gnawed on a potato that he insisted was a ball. Needless to say, the kid was doted on, and let me tell you, he was totally LOVING IT.
Meanwhile, Paul and I went out to eat a nice Italian restaurant. We gobbled up our food and enjoyed a few drinks. However, a couple days prior to our date, my allergies started acting up in a way that they hadn’t done in years, since I was a kid. My nose was completely stuffed up, so much so that my sinuses, eyes, and head would throb anytime I sat down. So I sounded quite nasal as I ordered my food and felt as if my eyeballs would explode out of their sockets as I ate the food that I could barely taste.
Then Paul and I decided to play some pool, one of our favorite things to do when we get a kid-free night. An hour or so after we started playing, though, I felt like I needed to go to the bathroom. To my complete and utter horror, as I was using the bathroom, I USED THE BATHROOM. As in, my stomach was upset and was letting me know in no uncertain terms.
To spare you guys the gory details, let’s just say I was thanking my lucky stars that the music in the ladies’ room was blaring on a level loud enough to pop eardrums. THANK YOU, God, for small favors, huh?
I ended up being stuck in the bathroom 5 or 6 times that night.
It was awful.
Couple that with throbbing sinuses and a severely stuffy nose and you have something akin to pure misery.
Fortunately, things got better after I took some over-the-counter medication the next day. But on the hour-and-fifteen minute drive to Paul’s parents’ house to pick up Nathan, I developed a CRAMP IN MY BUTT CHEEK from trying to hold it as long as I could! I finally made it to a gas station and let me tell you, you should have seen the look on the lady’s face at the register. I ran into the bathroom and came out a few minutes later to purchase the medicine. After I paid, she was staring at me so hard that I actually got a little flustered, and in an attempt to divert her unflinching gaze away from me, I nodded to the receipt machine and asked if I needed to sign the receipt.
“No,” she replied flatly as she handed me the receipt. I could feel her eyes boring into my back as I made a speedy exit. I guess some people are completely unaware of how they come across to others… either that, or they are just plain strange. I’m going with both.. this woman seemed totally NUTZO.
Anyway, things have settled down here. Nathan is back into his little routine and Paul has returned to work. As much as I enjoy dates with my husband, I’m hoping we don’t have another date-night like that for a long, long time.
On a Walk
Apr 19th
And enjoying the beautiful Spring weather!
Ignore that random number you see there. Date-stamps do not work well with photo editing, and quite frankly I don’t feel like undertaking the tedious task of erasing it and repairing the photo. Unless there is some shortcut I am unaware of, I’d rather just leave a date there. Even if it’s partial.
Can you see my sunburn? I had taken Nathan to the park the previous day and silly me forgot to put sunscreen on us. I got sunburned. Nathan, on the other hand, tanned. I’m glad he doesn’t have my fair skin… I never tan! Never. I just burn and peel…
And oh! Since the above picture was taken, I’ve lost 5 pounds! I’ve been working out 4x a week for months now, but I wasn’t seeing the results I’ve been wanting to see. So I reviewed my diet, made a few modifications (such as eliminating my 1 or 2 soft drinks a day and drinking more water), kicked my workouts up a notch, and the weight is finally starting to come off. I’m super excited to get back down to my pre-pregnancy size… It’s been long enough, and I am going to work my butt off (yes, pun intended) until I get there.
Busy, but in a good way
Apr 15th
Well, the past couple days have been busy! Yesterday my mom, Nathan, and I all went shopping… we hit a huge consignment sale and I’m not even kidding when I say we hit the jackpot and found a ton of super cute clothes for Nathan. So we were gone all day, and Nathan wasn’t able to take his nap until after five o’clock in the evening. Little guy was so tired that he fell right asleep instead of bickering with me for half an hour!
Wednesday was also really busy… We went to church Wednesday morning for bible study, and afterwards, we all decided to go out to eat together. When we left the restaurant, however, Nathan had a meltdown as I was trying to get him into his car seat. So I bribed him with the promise to take him to the park if he behaved and minded me.
So of course, he acted like a perfect little angel after I said that.
So he and I went to the park, and for the first time, he INITIATED climbing up the stairs to go down the slide! (I usually have to talk him into it.) Nathan and I had blast going down all the slides together, and I have to tell you that my heart does a special little pitter-patter when he gleefully says “Wheeeeeeeee!” as we zoom down together. There is nothing more special than seeing and hearing your kid having fun.
I couldn’t take Nathan to church with me Wednesday evening because he had a late nap and was still sleeping when I left, but church was great. Sunday is Palm Sunday (for those of you who may not be familiar with Christianity, it is the Sunday before Easter, the day that Jesus made his triumphant entry into Jerusalem) so Wednesday evening, we made Palm Crosses. It was my first time with the whole experience of making Palm Crosses (because up until I joined my church, an Episcopal church, I had only attended southern Baptist churches that never participated in such events).
It was enlightening and a ton of fun making those Palm Crosses. I am totally looking forward to the Blessing of the Palms on Palm Sunday and our Easter Service!!!
So anyway, it’s been a busy couple of days. Today, I took Nathan to the park and now it’s past his nap time, so this mama is off to take the little man to bed.
