life with a new baby
Mind Readers and Tinfoil Hats

I’m going to have to make a hat out of tinfoil and start wearing it every day. Tinfoil is supposed to block others from reading your mind, right? Because if that’s the case, I think I’ll have to make more than one.
I bet right now, you are wondering if I’ve lost touch with reality, aren’t you?
Well, I haven’t. But I’m pretty sure Nathan is so in-tune with me that he is starting to read my thoughts. Not in a coherent way… not like I’m thinking about the color red and so he will, too. More like, if he’s sound asleep and I start thinking about him, he wakes up. Or if we’re all asleep and I have a dream about him, he wakes up. Or sometimes if I just think about his name in my head, HE WAKES UP.
WITHOUT FAIL.
In order to keep him asleep, I have to try to refrain from thinking too deeply about him.
I’ve also noticed that we both get fussy simultaneously. When I am in a bad mood, so is he. When he is in a bad mood, so am I. When one of us is happy, so is the other. It’s like our emotions and feelings are feeding off of each other, constantly linked. His emotions seem to be like a mirror-image of my own.
Other moms have always told me that children are linked to their parents like that. But I never knew it was so strong. It’s like a little piece of my soul has detached itself from me and has formed its own body.
I can’t let Nathan see me become frustrated. If I do, the poor little guy loses his cool. And trust me, it’s not fun when Nathan loses his cool. You’d think the end of the world is rapidly approaching. But even when I strain to hide any negative emotions, SOMEHOW HE STILL KNOWS.
It makes things difficult.
Especially breastfeeding. He’s going through his difficult breastfeeding phase again. He only likes to nurse laying down in bed. If I try to sit anywhere, he acts like I’m torturing him. But then while we’re laying in bed, he’ll stop feeding and fling himself away, flailing his little arms and legs around in a fit of protest against, well, that’s the problem.
I DON’T KNOW.
It’s so stressful when your child doesn’t want to eat. I try to sing to him, rub his little head, give him gentle kisses… but so far, it doesn’t phase him. I try not to let him see how anxious it makes me when he flails around instead of eating, but my little mind reader picks up on it anyways, upsetting himself even more.
I’m trying to make it to a year. That’s three more months. I will consider myself very fortunate if Nathan continues to breastfeed much longer than twelve months. Until then, I’m thinking about making that tinfoil hat.

Tis the season for… mischief!

BIG SIGH OF RELIEF. I have most of my Christmas shopping done! I spent all day Saturday braving the crowds, getting jostled by oblivious texters while walking crowded walkways. I seriously can’t stand people who text and conveniently forget that the world around them continues to revolve. Oh yeah. Speaking of texters, I was almost More >
Oh the changes they go through…

Wow. The past few days have been so busy around here. Nathan has been a bit of a pill with his tantrums and not minding lately— but as I suspected, he’s hit a few more milestones. Take last night, for example. Part of his bedtime routine includes me singing to him before we say our More >
In which I rant a little about bad parenting

I’ve been working really hard with Nathan on cleaning up after himself when he makes a mess. We clean his room twice a day… once before nap time, and again before he goes to bed. I tell him that if he doesn’t want to clean up a huge mess, then he should either not get a More >
He peed! In the potty!
about 2 months ago - No comments
Nathan peed in his potty for the first time yesterday!! See, we’ve been “going to the potty” for a couple of months now, but it’s been slow. At first, he would only sit on his potty fully clothed. Then I coaxed him into sitting on it clad only in his diaper. It’s only recently that More >
Naps… soon to be a thing of the past
about 3 months ago - No comments
Nathan is slowly moving away from taking naps. As of now, he still naps when he’s really tired, but it’s getting more difficult to get him to fall asleep. I’ve been co-sleeping with him (during nap times only) since he was 11 months old. At first, I welcomed the rest and the naps. Here lately, More >
I hope I never have another week like this one…

This past week was stressful. Nathan has his first visit to the Emergency Room on Wednesday. We were at the park, having a good ole time together. We were the only ones there. We had initially met one of my friends and her kids, but after they left, I decided to let Nathan stay a More >
Oh Potty Training
about 3 months ago - No comments
Well, potty training is not advancing as quickly as I anticipated. Don’t get me wrong, Nathan loves sitting on his potty. WITH HIS DIAPER ON. The moment I take his diaper off, however, he starts crying and refuses to sit on his potty anymore. I don’t make a big deal out of it, because Nathan More >
Repetitions will quickly get your attention. Believe me.

The other day, I was busy in the kitchen making Nathan his lunch. I was in a hurry because everything was timed… I was cutting up his fruit and making my sandwich while I had some broccoli steaming on the stove. Nathan kept getting right under my feet, pulling at my shirt, trying to get me to More >
Beauty salon adventures

Last week, I had to get my bangs trimmed. Since I didn’t have a babysitter, I took Nathan with me. It was the first time he’d ever accompanied me to the hairdresser’s… and it was hilarious. To contain him and prevent too many mishaps, I told him to stand in front of me, in between More >
Opposite Day. I mean week. I mean month.
about 4 months ago - No comments
I think Nathan must be going through something like an Opposite Phase. He says exactly the opposite of what he means. Me: “Nathan, you’re not minding me. Do you want time out?” Nathan: “Yes!” Me: “You do? You want time out?” Nathan: “YES!” Me: “Fine. Go to time out.” Nathan: “Yes, Mommy! I sorry! Yes, More >

Breastfeeding is difficult. It does not come natural, well, at least to some women. I am not against breastfeeding, oh no. I just wish that all the Rah Rah talks about it will acknowledge this fact so moms that struggle with it will not feel bad or that they are doing something wrong. You know you are doing the right thing by sticking with it. You have come so far. Kudos to you! You can do it!
(I was going to do a “Rob Schneider” impression but figured that would be creepy to have him cheer you on for your BF efforts…)

I know!!! I had NO IDEA it would be sooo hard!! I mean, I knew there would be pitfalls here and there, but no idea the amount of patience and dedication it would require. I’m a breastfeeding AND a formula feeding mom. I wrote some posts earlier in the blog talking about how Nathan was having some weight gain issues, so we had to start supplimenting with formula. So, in some ways, formula feeding is easier. But all in all, I still think formula is nasty with horrible ingredients (Vegetable oil! Corn syrup!) BUT you gotta do what you gotta do to keep your child healthy, ya know?
