Nap Time Apocalypse

The nap-time saga continues.

Full force.

Yesterday was a struggle the apocalypse of all nap-time disagreements. Things with nap-time got bad. Like, Jerry Springer Bad… Nathan pulled out his theatrical skills and dramatics, screamed like an irate banshee, yanked out handfuls of my hair and tossed it around the room like confetti, and there were tears.

Lots of wet, sparking, and very sad tears.

This little guy wears his willpower like a bulletproof vest. Nothing can stop him when he sets his mind to something. And nothing can change his mind either. Yesterday, he made up his mind that he was not going to nap and that he would not tolerate any attempts at being cajoled into napping.

Paul and I unsuccessfully tried to put Nathan down three times for his nap. The first time, Nathan dozed lightly for about 20 minutes. Then he woke up angry that his willpower had been temporarily weakened and pierced by his sleepiness.

So then we decided to try to keep Nathan up for a while in the hopes that eventually, he would tire out and deflate.

Sleepy

It didn’t work.

He got really sleepy all right. He was grumpy and irritable and everything else that happens to those who live in the grumpified Land of the Sleepless. He could barely hold his head up, and his eyes would slowly shut, heavy with fatigue, but not ten seconds after he would doze off, he would wake up angry. He simply refused to nap. He must be going through the I-Don’t-Want-To-Miss-A-Single-Thing phase. You know, the phase where they want to stay awake because there is dust floating aimlessly around in the air.

How dare that dust float around and be so distracting!

I can’t wait for this phase to end.

I keep thinking that it’ll pass soon because Nathan is constantly transitioning between sleeping peacefully and waking up all the time. Maybe he’s about to reach another milestone, like cutting a tooth or learning how to point and laugh at my excessive clumsiness.

Or maybe he’s just plotting how to pee even more so we have to buy not millions of diapers, but trillions. TRILLIONS. I bet that’s what he’s doing. Plotting something.

Or maybe he just wants to be with Mommy and Daddy all the time and sleeping means Mommy and Daddy are not nearby.

Maybe he wants me to reabsorb him so I will always be nearby.

Who knows? All I know is that we all need some sleep around here.

Even the cats are tired.

  1. My son RARELY napped, even as an infant he was horrible at it. But he slept like a champ at night. To this day I still say…he plays hard and sleeps hard..

    Good luck!

  2. Nathan sleeps wonderfully at night, too. He’ll usually only wake up once to eat and sometimes he sleeps all the way through the night. Here lately, though, he’s been waking up 2-3 times a night AND refusing to nap!!
